"The baby brother to their famed Stags Leap Cab, the Angels Landing Napa is still incredibly rich and ripe, full of cassis, spice and toasty oak notes. Very approachable, but with great structure indicative of a wine that’s built to last. Serve with hearty meat."

"Bright and soft don’t generally fit together in the ordinary scheme of things. The sun? Not exactly soft. Pillows? Not really all that bright, generally. But such are the contradictions that make this California Chardonnay exciting. A bright nose of apple and pear is balanced with a light touch of oak that never overwhelms. The first sip presents more fruit and a full-bodied, silky feel, and then follows through with a crisp, mouth-coating finish."

"Somewhat of an unknown among sparking wines, the appellation Cremant de Bourgogne was created in 1973 to encompass all sparkling wines from Burgundy, in which any varietals grown in Burgundy are allowed. This sparkler is made from Chardonnay grown in the Macônnais region in the south of Burgundy, making it especially light with citrus notes and a touch of minerality. Try it in place of more expensive Champagnes with appetizers, cheeses and salads."

"A very refined and inviting wine, reminiscent of Côtes du Rhône, with a similar dark red coloring but a touch lighter in the body. Rasteau is an AOC in the southern Rhône, and it shares the best characteristics of Côtes du Rhône, Vacqueyras and Gigondas. It is well structured with a bit of spice and good balance in the mouth, characteristics of wines at much higher price points, but at this price it is perfect for everyday drinking."

"A refined example of the elegant Merlot grape. The nose is full of oak and spicy notes, and the color is deep red with hints of purple. As the flavors open up, ripe cherry dominates the earlier spice and finishes smoothly with heavy tannins. At this price, the quality of this wine outshines many of its peers. The additional age contributes to a sophisticated stylishness."

"Layered with subtle hints of spice and dark fruit, the heavy mouthfeel of this Chianti is full and inviting. Strawberry and raspberry show through a dense, earthy body that is heavy enough to pair with red sauces and meat-based dishes, but delicate enough to highlight the interplay of a silky texture and firm tannins. The finish brings more earthy, peppery notes together with a lasting hint of strawberry. This is a great value for a complex, food-friendly wine."

"This Italian Cabernet differs from its California counterparts in its lack of overt fruitiness, but what it lacks in typical character it makes up for with dark fruit, spice, and a touch of mint-dominated herbs. It retains the usual full-bodied Cabernet form but presents an earthy quality found in many Italian reds. For those seeking an alternative to the usual Cabernet style, this will be an interesting and rewarding buy."

"From the banks of the Loire River comes a true example of French Chardonnay, a smooth, full-bodied wine with subtle hints of freshly cut grass and apple. The ripeness of the grapes is evident on the nose, as aromas of fresh fruit and hay suggest the golden lightness of a summer’s afternoon. The finish is crisp and well-balanced."

"The fruity, full nose of this dark and smoky Merlot promises a wealth of bright fruit, but the starkly dry mouthfeel and the deliciously elegant depth of the body add a secondary layer of unexpected fullness. Hints of dark foresty earth intertwine with heavy fruit, the result of a perfect combination of dark Merlot (76%) and textured Cabernet Franc (24%), the perfect blending grape for adding a touch of unique character. The sustained finish has hints both of spice and the jammy fruit promised on the nose."

"A deep, luscious red in color, and heavy as they come, this Spanish beauty is absolutely delicious. The nose will knock you out with overwhelming dark fruit aromas, black cherry, and a touch of licorice and spice followed by a chewy mouthfeel that blends the fruit and spicy notes perfectly. This is the kind of wine that stains the glass dark red, and your teeth as well — the perfect match for steak, barbecue and even chocolate."

"A delicious combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot, this Meritage is full-bodied, fruit-forward… and fun. (Forgive my alliterative tendencies.) The nose is bright and invigorating and the best qualities of each varietal are represented in the spicy, fruity feel. Hints of vanilla, spice and black cherry are present in the finish and are balanced perfectly by supple tannins. Excellent."

"This Australian Shiraz, made up of 100% Shiraz grapes from 45-year-old vines, exhibits both an attractive fullness and a seductive smoothness that, together, create an extremely well-balanced wine. Deep purple in color; the nose is soft, with hints of cream and blackberry. Soft tannins give way to a mildly spicy finish that is balanced by a touch of oak and caramel. Perfect for those seeking a sophisticated wine to pair with grilled meats or to show off at a party."

"A very impressive blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (91%), Cabernet Franc (6%), and Merlot (3%). It is dark magenta in color with a bright, expressive nose of raspberry pie, smoke and vanilla. The feel is textured to the hilt, dense but not overbearing and complex enough to suggest varied layers of ripe fruit. On the finish, hints of earthiness and dirt are complemented by blackberry aromas and heavy tannins, creating a perfect balance. An argument exists for further aging, but it can be enjoyed now with no harm done."

"From the multiple award-winning Kendermanns winery in Germany comes this remarkable Blanc de Noir, perfect for holiday meals or parties. It’s made from Pinot Noir grapes, and it shows: the body is a touch heavier and riper than sparkling wines made with Chardonnay or other white grapes, and the finish has a great spicy quality with a a bit of acidity. I sensed more complexity and layers of flavor in this sparkling wine than in any others at this price point. Like any German wine, the quality is exceptional. This would pair perfectly with spicy dishes such as Asian cuisine, or pasta in a cream sauce."

"The new vintage of this perennial favorite French Chardonnay is as excellent as its predecessors. A crisp nose of sun-infused hay and green apple leads to a sharp, fruity mouthfeel that isn’t overpowering. The structure is well-balanced and light, and the finish shows fresh fruit and a touch of gentle herbs. Perfect for summer, or any other time of year when summer needs recapturing."

"Sangiovese is the primary grape in this Italian blend of Sangiovese (70%) and Montepulciano (30%), a well-balanced combination that is similar to Chianti but a bit lighter and with more fruit. The tannins are pronounced but hang back a bit because of the dark fruit notes, and there is a characteristic subtle spiciness common to Italian reds that highlights the depth and character of the wine."

What else can I say? The Terra Barossa Chardonnay opens with a bright nose and presents hints of all the usual delicious Chardonnay staples: apple, melon and a touch of fresh hay."

"From the D.O. of Ribera del Duero in Spain comes this Tempranillo, dark purple in color with a nose of soft vanilla and earthiness. It is unlike other Tempranillos in that it tends toward seductive smoothness instead of overt spiciness, but spice and dense tannins are present, as well as plummy, jammy fruit and a touch of earth and minerality. The finish is ripe and lasting."

The nose is smooth and subtle, indicating the round, full layers of densely-packed fruit to come. Soft tannins and bright, in-your-face fruit create a fitting finish for a very stylish wine."

"Gigondas is an appellation located in the Southern Rhône region of France and is considered to be a “little brother” of the famed Châteauneuf-du-Papes AOC. What that translates to is a wine of superior quality at a lower price than its older brothers. With medium tannins and soft fruit on the palate, this Gigondas features the best qualities of the Rhône region. The reddish purple color suggests the elegance of the Côtes du Rhône, and the body is perfectly balanced with hints of spicebox and a touch of heaviness in the mouthfeel. In the end, despite all comparisons, this expression of the Gigondas appellation stands on its own."

"Unlike its robust New Zealand counterparts, this Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc holds back its delectable fruit on the nose, presenting only tempting hints of citrus fruit, hay, and mown grass. Once the first sip is taken, however, the game is on. The list of delicious citrus fruit detectable in this wine reads like an ingredient list for a fruit salad: pear, apple, melon, kiwi and banana are all present. The finish is crisp and — I really struggled to show off and find a better word but I kept coming back to this — bright. Try it and you’ll see why."
