"Phenomenal effort from a world-renowned Bordeaux producer! Amazing depth of aromas: fresh-mown grass, white grapefruit, star fruit and wet gravel notes waft up from the glass and on to your palate. Made of 65% Sauvignon Blanc and 35% Sèmillon; fresh and vibrant, with excellent grip. Limitless food-pairing potential; the stony, mineral undertones suggest it would be wonderful with mussels, oysters, lobster or crab, while the bright, zesty fruit and lush herbal notes mean it would be a perfect match for salads with goat cheese or lemon-basil chicken. White wine enthusiasts, it is time for your moment in the sun! This wine is serious, one of the few great “age-able” whites — try it again in a few years and you’ll be amazed at how it has evolved."

"The Don Melchor has been hailed by both the Wine Spectator and Robert Parker as the best Cabernet Sauvignon out of Chile, and I must say, I concur. Full-bodied and dense, with rich, ripe fruit, and notes of vanilla and tobacco, yet elegant, with restrained alcohol and muscular tannins. Great balance and complexity; I was still thinking about it hours later! Though we enjoyed it thoroughly now, this wine will continue to drink amazingly for the next decade or so. The best part of all, though, is that you can enjoy this wine for a fraction of what you would pay for a Napa Valley Cult cab; in this economy every penny counts, but you definitely don’t need to sacrifice on quality! P.S. Check out Concha y Toro’s website for the recipe of one of their favorite pairings — garlic steak."

"The winemakers at Dain hold to the philosophy that great wines can only come from great terrior, and that’s why they’ve chosen to create the Juliet Pinot Noir from grapes sourced from Anderson Valley in Mendocino County. Further north than Napa or Sonoma, the climate is considerably cooler, and the breeze from the Pacific is an additional cooling factor — in other words, just the perfect climate for growing great, light-bodied, complex, Burgundian-style Pinot Noir. Aptly named, the Juliet is delicate and feminine, with subtle strawberry and cherry notes, highlighted by a hint of spice. Drinks deliciously now, but hang on for a year or two and watch this one bloom!"

"People have a tendency to overlook New Zealand Pinot Noir, perhaps because of its great success in producing world-class whites. However, the cool, maritime climate and excellent soils make regions like Marlborough perfect for growing Burgundian-inspired reds that combine Old World structure and finesse with New World ripe, super-bright fruits that appeal to many wine drinkers. The 2006 Delta boasts cherry, violets and a touch of raspberry on the nose and palate, with such vibrant acidity that it is easy to imagine pairing with just about anything. Beyond the classic matches of salmon, tuna and pork, I envisioned serving this with paella or risotto. This wine has instant appeal for Oregon wine drinkers looking for something different, those who enjoy ripe fruits but find California wines to be too overpowering, and those who like classically styled wines but are looking for something less dusty or earthy. And the lighter style makes this refreshing for anyone who just can’t bear to give up their red wines, even in the sweltering summer heat."

"Northern Rhône is an acquired taste — and it’s about time you acquired it! 100% Syrah in a strapping, robust style much different than your average Australian or Californian Syrah/Shiraz. The classic blackberry, pomegranate and currant notes are present, but added to the fruit is a dense layer of smoke, a rich earthy-gamey element and a healthy dose of pepper and spice. The robust structure of the wine suggests that it may last for a decade, but open one up and let it breathe for a few hours to enjoy now."

"Hailing from the Northern Rhone appellation of St. Joseph, this 100% French Syrah is monstrous and chewy; a deep, hearty red for cold winter nights. Currently a bit closed off at first, a few years of cellaring should allow this bombshell-in-waiting the opportunity to blossom. After a few hours of decanting, I was able to fully appreciate its potential. The rustic tar, black pepper and cola notes began to emerge, balanced by dense currant and black cherry fruits. The gamey elements of this wine suggest pairing with fresh-killed deer or wild boar — preferably in front of a stone hearth — seriously medieval!"

"I’ll give you a minute to get over the sticker shock… all right? Now I want you to close your eyes and imagine a wine unlike any Napa fruit bomb you’ve ever had, one that doesn’t hit you hard and then go away, but rather persistently captivates you, lingering and evolving in your mouth. A wine that gives you blackberries and cassis, but also chocolate and leather and tobacco. A wine that you’re still tasting an hour later. The Sanrocco and a hearty Italian meal mutually enhance each other, neither overpowering. Layer upon layer of flavors unfold and develop with every sip, all the way to the bottom of the glass. Trust me, an everlasting memory like that is worth the extra few bucks!"

On the palate, stony minerality, smoke and gunflint notes keep the fruit in check, and the lively and vibrant acidity makes for a truly refreshing, yet serious drink. The pairing potentials are limitless — beyond classic shellfish dishes, try this with caprese salad or a chicken gyro. This wine is a consistent winner. After all, how can you go wrong with a wine that is served at the tables of the French Parliament?"

"A slew of low-quality, watery “unoaked” Chardonnays have hit the market recently, causing many former fans of the naked, fruit-forward style to run back to the richer, buttery, oaky Chards of the past. But wait! There is hope yet with the Morgan Metallico! It’s lush and full, with mouthwatering peach, pineapple, kiwi and melon flavors unfettered by the smoky, toasty oak of the classic Morgan Chardonnays. This wine is rich and incredibly smooth, but maintains a hearty backbone of acidity that lends the wine to flexible food-pairing opportunities. Fans of white Burgundy, please do not pass this one up!"

"Absolutely deserving of every one of the 91 points from Tanzer! Richly textured, with luscious, juicy black fruit flavors, peppered with tantalizing hints of cranberry, pomegranate and a mixed bag of spices. The Niels Verburg echoes the New World fruit, while maintaining the grape’s French roots through the dense forest of smoky/earthy notes. This wine is a steal at $33 — I’d pay $50 easily. Super buy!"

"Some wines really just do not need staff reviews — I should just sit back and let the accolades speak for themselves! The Jimmy Section Shiraz is the signature wine of Oliverhill, premium quality and limited production, made from grapes from a single vineyard in the McLaren Vale. Incredibly lush, extracted and substantial; packed to the brim with ripe blueberry, black cherry, black currant, chocolate and white pepper. Explosive and juicy, but with the balance and structure to last for years. It’s the kind of exceptional, elegant wine you can never go wrong in serving to out-of-town guests or business associates, but I find it to be the best pick-me-up after a long, terrible day. You’ll always be happy after a glass of this wine!"

"Fresh, fun and fantastic — the Palo Alto Sauvignon Blanc is every bit as good as its popular red counterpart. Very crisp, with copious amounts of mouthwatering acidity, but not pushy or forward like many New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. This wine is sophisticated and refreshing, perfect for the patio, but excellent when served alongside shrimp cocktail or baked white fish."

"Classically styled, with just the right amount of sweetness, this is a wine you just can’t go wrong with. Ripe apricot dominates on the nose and palate, with canned peaches and tart green apple holding up the back end. Lively acidity balances out the sweetness, creating a fun, fruity finish that isn’t sticky or syrupy. Makes a fantastic gift, but pairs nicely with honey-ham or wild sole."

"The Renegades is definitely no Australian fruit bomb; the cooler climate of the Clare Valley allows for a slower ripening process, creating a structured, elegant style of Cabernet more akin to those from Washington or France than those from California. There’s a deep herbal influence running through the Renegades, adding another layer of complexity to the wine. Dense and powerful, perfect for pairing — try it with beef and green pepper stir fry."

"Secretly made by one of my absolute favorite Australian producers, the Renegades Langhorne Creek red blend is a breath of fresh air when you’re sick of the same old single varietals. Lush and spicy from the Shiraz, weighty and structured from the Cabernet, beautiful and elegant from the Petit Verdot — yet the Renegades is more than just the sum of its parts. With a prominent mint/ eucalyptus element running through the rich black fruits, the wine grabs your attention and makes you feel like springtime. I’ve loved many Australian blends through the years, but this is by far the most intriguing I’ve had in a long time."

"If your palate is worn out from the overwhelming oak of most California Chardonnays, but you can’t handle the sting of the high acid “naked” Chards, then the Renegades is the perfect compromise for you! Mellowed by a smooth, buttery mouthfeel, but bursting with intense tropical melon, banana and papaya fruit flavors — save your tongue and delight your palate at the same time. Vibrant and lively, but not acidic, with just a tiny amount of barrel aging to add complexity. Secretly made by the famed Wildberry Estate — several dollars cheaper than their own Chardonnay. What a steal!"

"On the nose, black tea supersedes the dark berry notes, lending a fascinating twist on the traditional herbal undertones of the varietal. Medium-bodied, the exotic tea flavors follow through on the palate, backed up by firm tannic structure and a hearty dose of black cherry, currant and mocha. While it’s an excellent match for many red meat dishes, the spicy herbal notes make me crave an Asian-inspired meat dish, such as Chinese beef and green peppers. Limited edition — make sure you pick one up while they last!"

"If you ask a Wine Associate at Premier for a recommendation for a good Zin, in any price range, invariably you will be led straight to the Sobons. While each bottling is a superb example of the Amador County style of Zinfandel, my personal favorite is the Rocky Top. Not as spicy or sweet as the Fiddletown, not as restrained as the Cougar Hill, this wine is bold and rich, with densely layered blackberry, dark cherry and cacao notes. Blended with small amounts of Petite Sirah, Carignan and Barbera to add complexity, it pairs beautifully with any roasted or grilled red meat dish."

"Possesses the sort of elegance that is coveted by winemakers around the world. The lengthy stay in French oak barrels (half new) is evidenced in the warm, toasted nut and mocha flavors that never overwhelm the bright red fruit. Ripe red raspberry and maraschino cherry dominate on the palate, but they are laced with cinnamon, nutmeg and chocolate notes, creating a well-rounded and complex flavor on the tongue. The flavors are concentrated, but not heavy, and the alcohol does not overpower the fruit. Even at $60 I still feel as though this wine is a steal!"
