"Looking for a white wine that is a little off the beaten path? Try this gorgeous Albariño. Albariño is a grape native to the Iberian Peninsula — Spain and Portugal — and it is a great change of pace from the some of the more popular white grapes. The wine is perfectly balanced, showcasing all of its flavors. It has intense aromas of citrus and melon and a good backbone of zesty acidity. The finish has a cleansing minerality aspect, making it a perfect match for shellfish."

"The aromas of ripe red fruits are dominant on the nose. From first whiff you think that this a fuller style Pinot, and at nearly 15% alcohol you would be correct. On the palate, the flavors of wildberrry, cherry and herbs are richer than most Pinots. The finish is full of flavor and hardy."

"A interesting blend of 63% Cabernet, 20% Sangiovese, 9% Merlot, and 8% Petite Sirah; a Super Tuscan out of California. Flavors of Italian herbs (oregano and basil), black cherry and smoked leather are pushed along over the medium sweet tannins. The finish is spicy, round and structured. The wine is a perfect match for Italian spices on a grilled steak."

"Classic blending for the Right Bank (80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet, 10% Cabernet Franc) from a classic vintage. The owner of the chateaux is the former mayor of Saint-Émillion. After some swirling in the glass the wine started to show itself off. The scents of sage and violets really attract your sense of smell and urge you to follow the wine all the way to the finish. On the palate, overripe cherry and blackberry coat your mouth and leave you to wonder what more the wine could bring to the table. The finish is long, and the tannins give the wine the structure that you want from a 2005 Bordeaux. Find the best cut of meat you can and serve this wine with it after about 3–5 hours of decanting."

"A great ’05 Bordeaux to drink up now. A softer, more medium-bodied wine than most of the ’05s, showing some smoke and leather. Flavors of earth and black cherries roll around on your palate, making this wine a great complement to beef with a mushroom sauce."

"A great deal from the fabulous ’05 vintage. Coming from the right bank, this Saint-Émilion is really showing its Merlot. Fresh blueberry and strawberry flavors are abundant on the nose and palate. The wine is a little tightly wound and the tannins are a little tight, but with a little time the tannins will diminish and the big underlying fruit will come forward. Try in 2009 or just decant it for an hour or so."

"“Oh, my Lord” is this wine good. First of all, there are very few ’05 Bordeaux that most people could afford, and this one is one of the best deals now. It has flavors of cherry cola swimming on fine, smooth tannins, and a touch of smoke and blueberries on the finish that stays with you. While you are waiting 15–20 for all your first and second growths to be ready to drink, drink this one in the meantime for the next 10 years at least."

"The Cholila Ranch is widely believed to be the area where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid retired, and with the ability to produce some really fine Malbecs I can see why. The wine’s aromatics are very flowery and pretty, giving the impression the wine will be a softer style. The body is indeed softer than most Malbecs, but the underlying complexity and the flavors of black cherry and California plum give this wine some personality. This wine was made to be served with comfort food: meat loaf, stew, soup, etc. And the comfort of the ranch must have been what convinced Butch and The Kid to stay."

"After a little time the wine started to show off all of its personality. Ripe cherry, like those cough drops that taste like candy, herbs and a touch of forest floor comprise this Chassagne-Montrachet. It is almost like a new world Pinot now, with youthful energy and brashness, but in a few years this wine will soften and mellow, revealing a hidden complexity that is hard to detect right now. Five years from now this will be a classic Burgundy from a classic vintage."

"The golden yellow color of this wine tells you right away that it will be sweet and rich. Huge aromas of honeysuckle, flowers and pineapple waft up from the glass, and the sweet flavors roll around on the palate and dance on your taste buds. The wine is not as heavy as ice wine but has as much intense flavor, if not more. The high acidity level of the Chenin Blanc grape and the botrytis helped preserve this wine for the past 20 years and will continue to do so for 10 more."

"So this is why the pope use to live here (Chateauneuf-du-Pape means “home of the pope”). This wine is outstanding. This single vineyard bottling is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah aged in French oak. The nose has sweet aromas of blue raspberry and strawberries that seem to fill the room, not just the glass. Flavors of black plum, black cherry and spice (white pepper and sage) are abundant in the wine’s multiple layers. The tannins are firm but well balanced, giving the wine enough oomph to pair with meats as well as other meals that match a CDP. Drink over the next five years."

"Ruby in color with scents of currants and red fruits. This bargain wine is a blend of 40% Bobal, 20% Merlot and 10% each of Syrah, Cabernet, Tempranillo and Garnacha. The wine sees no oak and the fruit (cassis/berries) and pepper just oozes over the palate, with very little tannin. It has a rich mouthfeel and the finish is big and sweet. One would be very hard pressed to find a wine at this price point with this much fruit and versatility."

"A Bordeaux blend in the heart of Italy — 70% Cabernet Sauvigon and 30% Cabernet Franc, from vineyards throughout Umbria, this wine ranks up there with some of the better Bordeaux chateaux. Huge dark fruit on the nose with pepper and herbs on the palate. Layers of complexity and fruit coat your mouth and the finish continues on well after you swallow. The tannins are sweet and soft, allowing you to open this wine now and save a few bottles for the cellar. This “Tre Bicchieri” winner screams for a steak or venison."

"Spanish wine perfect for American barbecue. Burgers, chicken or pork, it doesn’t matter. It’s 100% Tempranillo, but you would swear that it was a California Pinot Noir. Bright cherry and earth are mixed in with herbs and spices. This one should continue to drink for the next two years or so."

"The interesting blend of 61% Shiraz, 23% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Tempranillo is what grabbed me to try this wine. This is the first Tempranillo that I’ve seen in Australia. The nose has sweet fruit like blackberry and plum wafting up; that turns into ripe flavors carried along by the mild tannins. The finish is velvety smooth with some spice. Perfect with grilled chicken or pork."

"The grapes for this wine come from vines that are more than 100 years old. The dark purple color lets you know to hang on to your knickers. From start to finish this wine doesn’t try to be coy or subtle — it is full throttle all the way. Flavors of white pepper, eucalyptus and spice turn into warmed fruits (not stewed) like plum, raspberry, and currant. Some wines with alcohol this high (15.5%) tend to be thick and syrupy, but this one has a balance and integration of fruit, alcohol, and tannin that is hard to match."

"This Pinot is huge and full, and has intensely ripe fruit. Not for the elegant Pinot drinker, this wine, at 14.9% alcohol, has so much fruit that lots of Californian producers are embracing it and trying to emulate it. The huge flavors of wild cherry, intertwined with sage and other spices, all in balance with the tannins and alcohol, make this wine distinctly California. This is the second label of Peter Michael, and considering what some of his wines go for, this is really a great deal."

"From the newly named (2001) D.O. of Montsant, which encloses the more famous D.O. of Priorat, comes another wine from importer Eric Solomon. The wine is medium bodied with aromas of ripe strawberries and white pepper. On the palate, flavors of Asian spice and tea dance on your tongue in balance with the light tannins. This wine is a great match with a pork chop marinated in soy sauce. Looking for something new and different? Try out this wine."

"This Italian white wine is a blend of 70% Trebbiano and 30% Grechetto from the Umbria region. On the nose, there are hints of pineapple and lemon zest. On the palate, there are flavors of citrus fruits and some melon. The wine seems to have that perfect balance of acidity and structure. It is great with a seafood risotto dish. It has enough body to stand up to the risotto, but it is light enough not to overpower the seafood. But if dinner seems like too much effort, just chill this wine and sip it outside on a warm evening."

Some Petite Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc are blended into this unfiltered wine, giving it a beautiful color (dark purple) and aromas (oak, black currants, and cassis). "From the acclaimed 2003 vintage, this wine opens up with good spice on the nose, with sweet strawberries. It is medium in body and has flavors of Champagne raspberries and red plums. Drink this one over the next 3–5 years."

"It is time to start to drink all of those ’03 CDPs. That insanely hot vintage has produced lots of great wines and the Sabon Cuvée Prestige is a perfect example. The wine has a deep, dark color and an enormous, complex bouquet. Scents of white pepper, raspberries, cassis, and Provençal herbs dance along the structured tannins that are now coming into balance. It is not shy and all the huge fruit is in perfect alignment with its alcohol and tannin. This wine will hold for another 10 to 15 years but there is no need to continue to sit on it — it’s ready, and you will be so happy that you tried it."

"This wine is the color of white gold. Sweet peaches and citrus flavors are carried along the palate by the rich acidity. This wine has some weight, almost like petrol, giving this Spätlese some kick. The finish is fruity, and honey seems to linger."

"A grape native to Greece that has been growing in Campania for centuries, Greco (Italian for Greek) is one of the more popular white wines in all of Italy. From the hillside single vineyard of Loggia della Serra, this wine explains why the grape is so sought after. Bright gold color and sweet pineapple aromas, almost like a Jolly Rancher, are the first things you notice. On the first taste it is surprisingly dry, more than you might expect because of the sweet nose, with a zingy acidity intertwined with Bartlett pear and green apple flavors. The finish is long and cleansing, with fruit and minerality. Pair this wine with ham, grilled fish or poultry, or chilled salmon."

"This Austrailian wine exhibits all the great characteristics of the Chardonnay grape without the manipulation of oak. Melon, herbs, and an underlining complexity dominate the flavor spectrum of this full-bodied wine. The finish is very clean, making this a wine with most seafood dishes. So twist off the cap and enjoy."

"The aromatics of this smell exactly like a white cake cupcake with strawberry frosting. Very intriguing. This medium bodied Pinot Noir has herbs (mostly thyme), spices (mostly white pepper), and strawberries, all balanced by the velvety tannins. Drink it over the next 3–5 years."
